What is your pre-wax advice?
Hair needs to be about half a cm long before it can be waxed, particularly if it has been previously shaved. Please leave at least 3 weeks since your last shave and allow at least 4 weeks between wax treatments. If it is your first time getting waxed and are not sure of length do not trim and we can do this in salon, as it is better to be too long rather than too short as hairs will not remove easily. It’s recommended that you gently exfoliate the area to be treated, beginning 2-3 days before your waxing appointment. This removes any dead skin and lifts the hair which makes it easier to remove, and results in a smoother finish for you.
Are your waxing therapists male or female?
All our waxing therapists at The Fountain of Beauty are female, highly qualified and experienced.
Is men’s waxing really popular?
Yes, it is! We have lots of male clients here at The Fountain of Beauty. It is estimated that as many as one third of all men get rid of their body hair regularly. In saying that long before waxing became popular with the likes of David Beckham and celebrities alike sporting the hair free look, men were removing their hair with whatever method they could find available to them. Athletes do it, body builders do it and a long time ago warriors did it.
Are there any conditions which mean I won’t be able to have a wax treatment?
If you have any form of contagious skin condition we are unable to wax the affected area until the condition has cleared up. Sunburned, chaffed or broken skin cannot be waxed until it is completely healed. Clients who are taking Accutane will need to delay having a wax treatment until at least six months after completing their medication. Skin that has been treated with steroid creams, Retin-A or any other retinoid acne products cannot be waxed for three months after the course of treatment has been completed.
Why is waxing a better option for men’s hair removal?
Skin stays smoother longer when you have unwanted hair removed with waxing by a well-trained therapist. Regrowth is slower and softer, and less irritating than shaving. A smooth body makes your skin look firmer and your muscles more defined.
What areas can be waxed?
Waxing is effective on just about any area except the head and beard. Back, shoulders, chest, stomach, ears, nostrils, and especially the intimate area all feel and look better when they are smooth and hair-free. Swimmers and cyclists improve performance by keeping legs hair free. That “unibrow” look can be separated into two distinct brows. Many men overlook the growth on their ears and in their nostrils that are noticeable to others when close-up.
What should I expect, and does it hurt?
When you make your appointment, we will discuss what areas you would like treated.
Upon arrival for your appointment, the therapist will escort you to the treatment room where she will confirm with you the areas you are wanting waxed, and answer any questions you might have. She will then invite you to undress to the appropriate level before exiting the room.
A few minutes later she will return, checking before entering to make sure you are ready to proceed. For most areas of the body we use high-quality Outback Organics True Blue strip wax. A thin layer of this wax is applied with a spatula, then a paper strip is placed over the wax. When the paper strip is pulled away the wax and hair is removed. Pressure is applied after each strip to dissipate any discomfort. For intimate areas we use a mixture of Outback Organics True Blue strip wax and Outback Organics Gold Peelable wax, which is very gentle on your skin.
Most men find that waxing is not nearly as uncomfortable as they expected. The momentary sensation when the therapist removes the wax is the worst of it, and any discomfort is generally soothed by the application of a calming lotion when waxing has been completed.
Subsequent hair removal within a 4-6 week time period becomes increasingly easier as the hair becomes softer and less coarse.
What type of wax do you use?
We use Outback Organics wax along with their pre and post wax products.
Outback Organics fuse the latest cosmetic ingredients with innovative natural extracts from the coastline, forests and bush lands of Australia to create ethical products that are as perfect for spas, salons and beauty therapists as they are for individuals. The wax is applied with a spatula and removed with paper strips; this method of waxing is called strip waxing and is a great method for larger areas such as the legs or arms. For sensitive and intimate areas, we use Outback Organics Gold Peelable wax.
Outback Organics entire range is free from synthetic colouring and fragrances, parabens and other harsh chemicals. They will never test on animals and endeavour to make as many of their products as vegan friendly as possible. Many of their luxurious Australian botanical products contain either pure, organic tea tree oil or lemon myrtle oil – two of nature’s strongest known antiseptics and wonderful natural remedies in the treatment of countless skin ailments, cuts, scrapes, insect bites and minor infections.
To complement their original tea tree line, they have also created the UK’s most complete range of wax-related skin care products. Each has been designed from the ground up by professional therapists working in the industry. They are specifically formulated to tackle the most common complaints after hair removal: irritation, pimples and ingrown hairs.
Will I be 100% hairless after my first service?
Waxing is very rarely perfect the first time as there are three phases to hair growth. To be removed successfully, hair has to be growing in a specific phase. It’s not until you’re waxed a 3rd, 4th, and possibly 5th time (4 – 6 weeks apart), that waxing is completely effective, as by this time most of your hair will be in the same growth phase.
What is your post-wax advice?
We want you to look and feel great after your wax treatment. It’s normal to experiences light redness or small bumps after waxing but these will usually subside within 24-48 hours. You can minimise any after-effects by following these guidelines during that period:
- Avoid hot baths or showers
- No saunas, hot tubs or steam treatments
- Do not tan (sunbathing, sun beds or fake tans)
- No sport, gym, work or other heavy exercise
- Avoid scratching or touching the treated area with unwashed hands
- Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools
- Do not apply deodorants, body sprays, powders, lotions or other products to the area, other than those recommended by your therapist.
We also stock the Outback Organics homecare products such as face and body scrub, bush balm, ingrown hair serum and post wax spray to help tackle any further reactions after waxing.
